On 3rd May 2013 Maribel Ramos was reported missing. Her roommate KC Joy claimed that she had never come home the night before (May 2nd) but she was caught on CCTV dropping off the rent at the office of their apartment complex. Maribel was a 36 year old Iraq war veteran who was murdered by her roommate Kwang Choi Joy.
According to the prosecution, the two had argued about rent on May 2, 2013 which resulted in Maribel telling KC he needed to move out of their Fullerton home because he was not paying his rent. KC took to a Yelp discussion board that had been set up to help find Maribel, claiming that he would give his life for her, she was his only family and that she was the sole beneficiary of his life insurance policy.
Maribel had also called 911 just 11 days before her disappearance, as she knew the calls were recorded. On the call she claimed to be afraid of her roommate and named KC Joy. Maribel’s body had been found in a shallow grave in Silverado Canyon and KC was sentenced to 15 years to life for the murder. He will be eligible for parole in December 2023.
